Ultrasonography is an essential non-invasive and non-painful tool used to diagnose and stage many diseases. Ultrasonography provides much better resolution and evaluation of internal organs than traditional radiographs, allowing early detection of nodules, cysts, tumors, and abscesses. It is especially useful for detection of abnormal fluid accumulations and evaluation of internal organ size and structure. The use of interventional ultrasonography allows early, minimally invasive, and more accurate diagnosis of a wide range of disease conditions. Examples of interventional ultrasonography are ultrasound guided fine needle aspirate, biopsy, thoracocentesis (taking a fluid sample from the chest), abdominocentesis (taking a fluid sample from the abdomen), and pericardiocentesis (taking fluid from the sac around the heart).

If your pet is having an ultrasound performed, some simple preparation will be required prior to the exam. Our receptionists will explain these instructions in more detail at the time an appointment is scheduled. It will be necessary to clip your pet’s hair in the area of the ultrasound. Most ultrasounds are performed without sedating the patient. Some pets require sedation, however, in order to obtain the most accurate ultrasound examination possible.
